Compound Safely Quells Bee-Killing Chalkbrood Science Daily Source: US Department of Agriculture 07 Mar 2008 Photo courtesy of Peggy Greb Area: United States From rabbits to horses to cows, many animals love alfalfa. America's premier pollinator of that crop, the alfalfa leafcutting bee Megachile rotundata, is vulnerable to a deadly fungal disease called chalkbrood. But the bees might be best protected from chalkbrood if their leafy nests are sprayed with an iprodione fungicide, according t

North West Italy, Feb 2008, trip report see my website for report with photos

North West Italy, February 2008 A meeting at Justy's house to sort out our forthcoming trip to Kuwait ended up with us booking some Ryanair flights to Italy as well! After reading a trip report by Richard Bonser the 4 of us all fancied a long weekend in northwest Italy chasing some Category C species and despite everyone else thinking we were crazy we were determined to go for it and squeeze a 3 day trip in. The aim of the trip was to score with 4 Category C species which now have self

Hundreds of people joined us at Civilian Art Projects to celebrate the opening of our second annual show and see the works of our 44 winning photographers. Quite a few people arrived before we officially opened, and as you can see in andertho's picture above, we were packed in like sardines barely ten minutes after 7 p.m. Soon the folks at Civilian formed a line at the door to kee

friday supper: salmon patties with dandelion greens

When we were growing up, Fridays meant fish to my Catholic parents. And usually, that meant croquettes which my mom used to eat growing up in Quebec. It involved a can of salmon, mashed potatoes and some salt and pepper that was shaped into patties, covered in breadcrumbs and then fried in butter. We would eat it with a blob of mayo and some salad. I was never crazy about the croquettes but always made sure that I had the correct ratio of mayo to each patty...enough mayo to cover the croquette b

I had a pretty awesome day even though it launched off on a bad start. Out of nowhere, diarrhoea attacked me just after I woke up! Adoi, my asshole was burning after what I went through. Nevertheless, I slowly recovered, and got ready to go out. Made last minute plans to hang out with Gordan and Ade till evening, and then have dinner with ChongChinThow. Left to Pyramid with Gordan around noon. First things first, I went around looking for a bag. The bag was going to be my super belated birthd

Administration Lets Murrelets Keep Habitat

Some good news on endangered species, for a change via Dateline Earth: the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service will retain existing critical habitat currently designated under the Endangered Species Act for marbled murrelet populations on the West Coast. This is a reversal from the Bush Administration, which had been trying to reduce the habitat in order to allow more logging in the old-growth forests where the bird nests. Islanders Spring meeting

Last Sat. I took the Land Yacht over to the SFYC in Tiburon. It I heard is the oldest YC on the Bay. Built some where in the 1800. Those good ole boys were most likely turning in their grave to know I was in there. heheh. I hear from some of the I-36 member that it is still a pretty Snotty club. There was a splicing class, lunch, talk on upcoming stuff and a talk from a guy who use to own a Islander, sold it purchased another boat and sailed to New Zealand with his family. I arrived somew

Rosti Benedict

Rosti Benedict March 13, 2008 0 Comments ? I spotted this recipe in the latest edition of Food & Drink magazine free from the LCBO in Ontario. I'm thinking it would make a great addition to my Easter Brunch table and would be lovely beside a nice slice of ham. This benedict recipe has no meat in it really just a bit of bacon in the rosti, but you could always add a slice of peameal bacon or, as shown in the photo, some lovely smoked salmon! Two Gill Nets Spotted on Columbia: Scapegoating Sea Lions for Human Error

I was walking along the docks down by the Columbia river this morning, when I happened upon a disturbing sight. Two boats that I did not recognize were moored down there. And they had great, hideous gill nets dripping from drums, peering over the sides of the boats. This is a strange thing to see, and you will not see it on any other river in the US. Gill nets, you see, are dirty pool. Particularly on a river, where nothing can get out of their way. They trail out behind fishing boats in grea

Weekend Update

The sturgeon have been driven almost to extinction. The great cod fisheries are a memory. Bluefin tuna are on the verge of collapse. Is it now the turn of Pacific salmon? Fisheries managers from California to Washington State are talking about halting the catch of Pacific salmon--chinook, coho, pinks--because so few are showing up to spawn in local rivers and streams. The proposed ban--including sport fishing--would be a first. "The situation is unprecedented and off the charts," said Donald
